One year later, the
Trojans got their celebration.
baseball team dropped a heartbreaker last season to Andrean, but were not
going to let it happen again as they beat Valparaiso 7-0 for the IHSAA
Sectional title on Monday.
“I don’t know if
last year was motivation for us or not,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell
said. “I’ve done enough over the years that it’s always nice to win (a
Sectional). This is about the kids now. They really worked hard for it and
earned it. I’m happy for them.”
A scoreless game
into the third inning saw the Trojans load the bases with one out thanks to
two hit by pitches and a bunt single from Connor Krantz.
A ground ball from
Chris VanEekeren to third was thrown away down the right field line that
plated all three Trojans for a 3-0 lead. A single by Austin Peterson scored
VanEekeren to push the lead to 4-0.
“We made a couple
of errors in the first inning, which is uncharacteristic of us, but got out
of it,” Campbell said. “They made a couple and we got three runs out of it.
You have to take advantage of situations when they come up in big games.”
The Vikings got a
leadoff double by Marcus Gholston in the fourth, but Peterson recorded two
strikeouts to get out of the situation. Peterson struck out nine in working
six innings for the win.
“Austin is awfully
good,” Campbell said. “When he is out there you know you have a chance to
win. In fact, you expect to win. You just have to play good defense and
score a couple runs.”
The Trojans scored
three more runs in the fourth as Tyler Nelson drew a walk and promptly stole
second base. A throwing error moved Nelson to third and he scored on Logan
Lawson’s bunt single.
singled to put runners on first and second. Lawson scored on a two-strike
suicide squeeze from Krantz and Torres scored on a single to right by Tommy
“Our senior class
is awfully good, but our outfielders (Nelson, Krantz and Kolton Cardenas)
made some great plays,” Campbell said. “Defensively, they made some great
plays and they put the ball in play, stole bases. They were a big factor
The Trojans didn’t
allow a run through three games during Sectional play and outscored their
“We have a lot of
arms,” Campbell said. “I got paranoid and had Grant (Brunt) DH in case he
had to get up early. We just didn’t know how (Austin Peterson’s) arm would
play in the IHSAA LaPorte Regional on Saturday against Lake Central
beginning at 10:30 a.m.
