Chesterton Baseball beats Portage 5-1

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team made it two wins in a row with a 5-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Portage on Tuesday night.

The Indians scored first as they took advantage of a Trojan error for a 1-0 lead after one inning.

The Trojans evened things in the third inning as Chris Boren singled to leadoff the frame. After stealing second and moving to third on a fly out, Boren scored on a passed ball.

That dent in the scoreboard opened up the Chesterton offense for three more runs in the fourth.

With two outs, Erik Ralph singled to center. Brett Roeske’s home run to left put the Trojans on top for good. Just for good measure, one batter later, Grant Brunt found the power stroke.

The final tally of the night came in the fifth as Owen Hallas singled and stole second. Hallas moved to third on a ground ball off the bat of Tommy Benson. Anthony Kurek’s sacrifice fly plated Hallas.

Austin Peterson pitched all seven innings on the hill for Chesterton. Peterson allowed just four hits and struck out 10 in the victory.

The Trojans will host Portage tonight beginning at 4:30 p.m.
