Chesterton Baseball beats Merrillville 7-4

The Chesterton baseball team picked up another Duneland Athletic Conference victory with a 7-4 win at Merrillville on Wednesday.

The Trojans broke on top in the first as Connor Krantz singled to start the game and promptly stole second base. Austin Petersonís RBI double made it 1-0.

The Pirates would answer with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead and the game remained that way until the fourth.

Brett Roeske led off the inning with a single and Logan Lawson was hit by a pitch. Kolton Cardenasí sacrifice bunt moved each runner up 90 feet. Krantz hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Roeske to tie the game.

Tommy Benson doubled to score Lawson and Peterson followed with an RBI single that plated Benson to make it 4-2.

A two-out single by Chris VanEekeren started a seventh inning rally for the Trojans. Roeske was hit by a pitch and Lawson drew a walk to load the bases. Cardenas singled to score VanEekeren and Roeske.

Krantz walked to reload the bases and Benson walked to score Lawson.

Merrillville rallied for two runs in the seventh, but it wasnít enough.

Offensively, Peterson and VanEekeren each had a pair of hits, while Benson, Cardenas and Peterson all tallied two RBIís.

On the mound, Grant Brunt picked up the win with five innings of work. Brunt allowed just three hits and struck out 10. Stephen Gilbertsen worked the final two frames and struck out five.

The Trojans return to the field on Friday when they host Hobart beginning at 4:30 p.m.
