The Chesterton baseball team improved to 11-5 overall with a 10-1 victory at Merrillville on Wednesday.

The Pirates scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead against Trojan starter Austin Peterson. From there, Peterson allowed just three hits and no runs as he struck out eight in picking up the win.

The Trojan bats got going in the third with back-to-back-to-back singles loading the bases. A one-out single by Anthony Kurek plated Ethan Conway and Owen Hallas. Chris Boren scored on a passed ball for a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth, Drew Vesling walked and scored on Conway’s triple. Boren reached on an error that scored Conway for a 5-1 lead.

The Trojans put the finishing touches on the victory with a five-run seventh inning.

Jake Harmon singled to start the frame and Steve Gilbertsen drew a walk. Vesling doubled to score Harmon and Gilbertsen. Conway’s single to right scored Vesling.

After Patrick Sosby singled and Chris Torres was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Conway and Sosby scored on passed balls.

Offensively, Conway was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI’s and three runs scored, while Vesling finished 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and two runs scored.
