Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team allowed just three hits and beat Hammond Morton 6-1 on Saturday morning.

The Trojans opened the scoring in the first as Ryan Slivka drove a double into right field with two outs. After Max Weller was hit by a pitch, Garrett Fairbanks’ single to left scored courtesy runner Connor Krantz with the game’s first run.

Things remained that way into the fifth when Danny Anderson singled to right field and courtesy runner Tyler Nelson advanced all the way to third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ray Keane. Nelson would score the game’s second run.

Hammond Morton finally got on the board in the top of the sixth with a solo run, but the Trojans answered with four of their own.

Haydn Malackowski led off the frame with a single to center and David Sharp followed with a hit to right field. Gunner Burkhart’s infield single loaded the bases.

Ethan Mahaffey drew a walk to score pinch-runner David Mahaffey and Aidan Turner singled to left scoring Sharp and Burkhart. A sacrifice bunt from Anderson moved the runners up 90 feet.

Keane’s sacrifice fly to center scored Ethan Mahaffey to set the final score.

Slivka picked up the win on the mound for the Trojans allowing just one hit and striking out 10. Keane pitched two innings of relief (3 strikeouts) and Chad Dzierba worked the seventh (3 strikeouts).

Chesterton returns to the field on Tuesday when they travel to Merrillville for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
