Chesterton Baseball beats EC Central 15-5

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team had an answer for everything East Chicago Central had.

The Trojans pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of seven ECC errors as they improved to 2-0 on the season with a 15-5 non-conference victory on Wednesday.

The visiting Cardinals jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the first before the Trojans answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Michael Griffin drew a one-out walk and Corey Rusboldt tripled to the wall in right field. Griffin scored and Rusboldt followed as the ball got away from the cutoff man.

Tyler Sufana singled and stole second base before advancing to third on a passed ball. Jeremy Jaeger’s RBI single gave Chesterton a 3-2 lead.

After East Chicago scored three second inning runs for a 5-3 lead, the Trojans answered again.

Back-to-back errors off the bat of Andrew Ralph and Griffin jump started the rally before Rusboldt’s single plated Ralph. Sufana’s RBI single scored Griffin to tie the game at 5-all.

After Jaeger reached on an error to load the bases, Matt Kubacki singled to center field to score Rusboldt and Sufana. A single by Cameron O’Brien scored Jaeger.

Zach Burris took over on the mound for the Trojans in relief of starter Tyler Quillin and allowed just a walk in the top of the third. He allowed just one hit over the final three frames.

The Trojan offense answered with four more runs in the third inning, including a two-run home run by Sufana, and three runs in the fifth to shut the door.

Rusboldt led the offense with four hits, while Ralph and Sufana each had two hits in the victory.
