Carr Trojan Softball blanks Merrillville

The Chesterton softball team took advantage of nine walks and rolled to a 10-0 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Merrillville on Tuesday.

The Trojans jumped on the scoreboard immediately with four first inning runs. Maddie Snemis drew a walk to start the rally and Noelle Michael was hit by a pitch. Gillian Price’s single to center scored Snemis.

Kaitlyn Carr doubled to score Michael and Price and scored when Hollie Skoczek singled to right.

The game stayed 4-0 into the fifth when Chesterton put up three more runs. Skoczek singled with one out and pinch-runner Marney Sisson scored on Jenna Vagner’s single after stealing second.

Hope Matta reached on an error and Snemis drew a walk to load the bases. Vagner scored on a passed ball and Michael was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Price’s sacrifice fly scored Matta.

The final touches on the night came in the top of the sixth when Lauren Kobialka and Mae Mallon singled to start a rally.

With two outs, Vagner walked and Matta’s fly ball was misplayed, scoring Mallon and Vagner. Michael’s single scored Matta with the game’s final run.

Offensively, Skoczek led the Trojans with two hits, while Michael, Price, Carr (double), Kobialka, Mallon and Vagner all added one hit each.

Carr pitched all six innings for Chesterton and struck out 10 to pick up the win.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 16, Merrillville 4

The Chesterton junior varsity had little trouble in a 16-4 five-inning victory over Merrillville on Tuesday.

Offensively, Hannah Massey (grand slam) and Peyton Hasselberger (4 RBI’s) each had two hits to lead the Trojans.

Madison Cowger struck out 10 in garnering the win.
