Boys Tennis sweeps Michigan City

The Chesterton boys tennis team ended Duneland Athletic Conference play with a 5-0 sweep of Michigan City on Tuesday.

In singles, Luke Liapes cruised to a win at No. 1 6-0, 6-1 over Danny Walker, while Corydon Gaff won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 against Christoph Walker.

Azeez Lakhani finished the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Connor Reynolds.

“It was nice to see Lakhani put together a complete match from start to finish,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said.

In doubles, Chad Whelan and Nick Hanson had to battle three sets to get a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 victory at No. 1 against Devon Stromer and Tommy Komay.

At No. 2, Drew Engels and James Navarro cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over John Bruning and Bohdan Walker.

“Whelan and Hanson are showing moments of greatness, but are also struggling to close matches out,” Bour said. “When they play aggressive doubles and take care of the basics, they will be a tough out in this region.”

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 5, Michigan City 2

The Chesterton junior varsity picked up a 5-2 victory over Michigan City on Tuesday.

In singles, winners included Danny Vear (No. 1), Aidan Li (No. 2) and Conner Potesta (No. 3).

In doubles, Troy Feller and John Powell (No. 1) and Sawyer Metz and Joe Wadowski (No. 2) didn’t drop a set on their way to victories.
