Boys Soccer upends Merrillville 5-2

The Chesterton boys soccer team improved to 5-1 on the year and 2-1 in Duneland Athletic Conference play with a 5-2 victory at Merrillville on Wednesday.

“It was a hard-fought game against a physical Merrillville team,” Chesterton coach Jamie Sensibaugh said. “We made some nice adjustments to the size of the field and dug deep. We found some things out about ourselves. I’m proud of the boys effort and perseverance.”

Billy Biehl spearheaded the Trojan offense with three goals, while Jared O’Dell and David Mudd each scored a goal.

Trent Weller dished out a pair of assists as O’Dell and John Ward also tallied a helper. Caleb Gmyrek recorded nine saves in the win.

Chesterton 5, Merrillville 2


Chesterton -- Billy Biehl 3 goals; Jared O’Dell 1 goal, 1 assist; David Mudd 1 goal; Trent Weller 2 assists; John Ward 1 assist; Caleb Gmyrek 9 saves.

Record -- Chesterton 5-1 (2-1 DAC).

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 4, Merrillville 0

The Chesterton junior varsity boys soccer team remained unbeaten (6-0) with a 4-0 victory at Merrillville.

Scoring for the Trojans were Derek O’Dell, Philip Flores, Brett Molnar and Gabe Mihut.

Assists came from Parker Farese, Sam Gutierrez and O’Dell. Joey Dishman and Bailey Matthys combined for four saves in goal.
