Boys Cross Country counting on experience

Chesterton boys cross country coach Tim Ray was less than content with last year’s 13th place finish at the New Prairie Semistate.

“It’s too early to tell,” Ray said. “Our goal is to try and get back to the State Finals.”

The Trojans open the season on Saturday in Carmel at the Greyhound Invitational.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend and finding out where we are,” Ray said. “We’ve had a little preview of what we could be, but we haven’t raced yet.”

The Trojans return three runners from last year’s Semistate lineup led by Kevin Kenney and Mitch Wilborn.

“I think we might have two packs, but Mitch and Kevin should be up front,” Ray said. “Alex Genetski, Tyler Vore and Jonah Noel are the guys probably in our second pack.”

The remainder of the group fighting for the top seven includes Parker Whitmore, Matt Johnson and Robert St. Pierre.

“We have three guys back from Semistate last year,” Ray said. “Most of our varsity roster is going to be juniors and seniors and I hope they can use the experience they have, especially in big races.”
