Andrew Davison 5th at Wrestling State Finals

Back To Front Page

His resume is good enough.

Chesterton sophomore Andrew Davison went 3-1 on his trip to the Indianapolis for the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals and finished fifth overall.

“He was in every match,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “Ability-wise, he’s right there. I’m sure fifth is not as high as he’d like, but it’s a great thing to build on.”

Davison opened Friday night with a win by fall against Indianapolis Roncalli’s Conner James at the 5:39 mark.

“Lots of guys who were ranked high lost on Friday night,” Joll said. “He wrestled a really good guy and beat a quality guy.”

James took Davison down early in the first period, but the sophomore escaped and got a takedown of his own for a 3-2 lead. An escape and takedown by James put him on top 5-3 heading into the final period.

“Andrew really went after the guy,” Joll said. “He wasn’t happy just taking him down. He’s always trying to score and make his position better.”

Davison did just that in the third period with an early reversal and back points for an 8-5 lead. Davison eventually turned James again and secured the fall.

“It’s a big deal to be in that atmosphere no matter how many big meets you’ve been in and he’s been in a lot of them,” Joll said. “I think winning that first match was really an outstanding performance.”

Saturday morning’s quarterfinal match-up came against eventual runner-up Cory Hinkle of Western. Hinkle got a first period takedown and second period reversal for a 4-0 lead.

Davison got a reversal late in the second period to cut the lead in half and an escape point in the third period, but fell 4-3.

“Not sure what happened the second match,” Joll said. “I’d like to chalk it up to inexperience and an older kid. We just didn’t wrestle great, but we’re in it until the final seconds.”

Davison rebounded with an impressive 9-1 victory over Avon’s Evan Elmore and then beat South Putnam’s Kyle Schaffer 8-6 in overtime.

“He regrouped really well to win the last two matches,” Joll said. “He showed just how good he is in the last match to win in overtime with a quick, decisive takedown.”
