Runs, runs, runs.

If you’re going to break out of a team slump, make sure it’s against your archrival.

The Chesterton baseball team tallied 12 hits and picked up a 10-4 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Valparaiso on Thursday.

“It’s certainly easier when you score runs,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said.

The Vikings took an early 1-0 lead, but the Trojans rebounded in the top of the second with two runs of their own.

Nate Majcher drew a one-out walk and scored on a passed ball, while JR Frederick scored on a double by Zach Jenks.

After Valpo tied things at two, the Trojans got two more runs in the third.

KJ Zelenika led off with a single and scored on Zach Rochowiak’s two-run home run over the left field fence.

“You just have to have good at bats,” Campbell said. “Certainly, this wasn’t the best pitcher in the league, but I’ve had teams that didn’t hit against guys like this too. We’re still taking too many first pitch strikes and when the pitcher gets ahead of you, you’re at their mercy.”

Chesterton had plenty of answers for the trio of Viking pitchers that were used in the fourth inning. Frederick drew a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch and Zach Jenks walked and scored on Jordan Peterson’s RBI single.

Two more Trojan runs scored in the sixth inning as Justin Jenks led off with a double and Zelenika beat out an infield single. Rochowiak’s RBI single scored Jenks and Alex Olson hit a sacrifice fly.

The final two Chesterton runs came on a two-run home run by Zelenika in the seventh inning.

Olson was the recipient of all the run support as he went four innings, allowing eight hits and recording three strikeouts.

“I thought Alex did a nice job considering he hasn’t thrown in a while,” Campbell said. “He got us to the fifth inning and Jordan had told me earlier that if we got to the fifth, he’d be good to go.”

Peterson worked the final three frames for the save as he struck out two and scattered three hits.
