Boys Track picks up pair of DAC wins

Chesterton boys track coach John Snyder got back involved in the program to help the numbers on the track.

In the Trojans first Duneland Athletic Conference meet of the season, the move appears to have paid off.

Chesterton won 10-of-16 events Tuesday night at Michigan City High School and picked up victories over the host Wolves (73 2/3-40 1/3) and Lake Central (69 1/2-44 1/2).

“Obviously very pleased with the kids winning 10-of-16 events,” Snyder said. “More importantly was our depth and that happens with numbers. We picked up a lot of second and third’s and that helped a lot with our overall score.”

The Trojans also had to deal with the weather and that created some less than impressive times, but a lot of competition.

“We ran decent,” Snyder said. “I wouldn’t say we were overwhelmed by any performances, but the weather had something to do with that.”

Chesterton got off to a good start early with victories in the field events. Mark VanDenburgh won the discus (131-6 1/2); Dan Dellumo won the shot put (46-6 1/2); Tony Smith won the pole vault (10-6); and Chris Linn won the high jump (6-0).

“Sam Jaeger (2nd, shot put) coming back out and Mark VanDenburgh starting to focus a little more has helped our throws,” Snyder said. “Dan Dellumo has been a great surprise. He’s been outstanding throwing the shot. Chris Linn is a move-in senior and he hit his PR in the high jump.

“You have to score those points. If you don’t, you’re really going to struggle.”

The Trojans dominated the distance races with David Osborn winning the 1,600 (4:41.18) and Chester Vanek winning the 3,200 (10:05.38).

“We let Coach (Tim) Ray make the decisin on who runs what in the distances,” Snyder said. “A lot of times with the distance guys, it’s based on what they are doing in training.

“There will be some decisions that have to be made with David on whether he’s a 800, mile guy or a one, two mile guy.”

Snyder also pointed to Osborn’s second place finish in the 800 and Thomas Halpin and Ian Smith’s efforts in the two-mile.

“I was most please in the 3,200 with Thomas Halpin and Ian Smith because we really needed some points there,” Snyder said. “They both hung on and ran very aggressive, very competitive races.”

In the hurdles, Jacob Holth won the 110’s (16.85) and the 300’s (42.33).

“Jacob Holth continues to do very well in the hurdles,” Snyder said. “The encouraging thing about the hurdlers is they are only sophomores. They’ll only get better.”

Other Trojan wins came from Jon Watson in the 200 (24.26) and the 4x400 Relay team of Joe Stahura, Cole Galloway, Matt Mabry and Joe Raffin (3:36.00).

“Jon Watson won the 200 and for a freshman to do that against Michigan City and Lake Central is pretty impressive,” Snyder said.
