NOTE The CHS Varsity/JV softball season opener Saturday has
been cancelled due to flooding of the field.
The Chesterton softball team has some holes to fill, but returns plenty of
talent to compete for another Duneland Athletic Conference and Sectional
title as the season opens Saturday at home against Lowell.
First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
“We are going to have a few new faces on the field and a few familiar faces
in different positions,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We may
struggle some at the beginning, but I’m confident that our leaders will help
us get to where we need to be.
“When everything comes together, we should be in the hunt.”
The Trojans return All-State and All-DAC selection Sydney Cooley after a
stellar freshman campaign. Cooley hit .455 for the season while splitting
time in the infield and outfield, along with pitching.
All-DAC selection Megan Tymorek hit .407 at the plate, but did most of her
damage as a pitcher in garnering an 11-3 record and 1.72 ERA.
Other returning Trojans include seniors Sammie Howard, Jeannette Sosnowski
(.292) and Lauren Stevenson. Megan Matheny also returns for her junior
season after hitting .338. Sophomores Sarah Richards (.231) and Mallory
McKee (.344) are also back.

The rest of the Chesterton roster is filled out by juniors Taylor
Bissonnette and Amanda Dujmovich, sophomores Lisette Martinez, Jessica
Stacy, Shelby Carter and Sierra LaFreniere along with freshmen Jordan
Wadding and Jill Bohnert.
“We have some very capable players moving up from JV and a couple of
talented freshmen,” Hopson said.
