Once is nice, but twice is better.

The Chesterton Boys Swimming and Diving team won its second consecutive IHSAA State Championship to highlight another stellar winter sports season.

And its not over yet, as the third-ranked CHS Gymnastics team continues its trek to the State Finals at the Valparaiso Regional this Friday night beginning at 5 p.m.

Other highlights during the winter included a second place finish for freshman Anthony Quiroz at 152 pounds in the IHSAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament and the Girls Swimming and Diving team finishing fourth at the State Finals.

On the hardwood, the Girls Basketball team advanced to the Sectional finals, while the Boys Basketball team put together an 11-win season.

Student-athletes on seven teams were recognized for their accomplishments Wednesday night at the Annual Winter Sports Award Program in the CHS Auditorium, including 13 Most Valuable Players and 50 Scholar-Athletes.

Winners of MVP awards for the third time in their career are Kelley Freeman (Gymnastics) and Kyle Whitaker (Boys Swimming). Two-time winners include Morgan Palombizio (Girls basketball), Callie Kuehl (Gymnastics), Bill Bass (Boys Swimming), Kari Ricard (Girls Diving) and Zack Thornton (Wrestling).

Other MVPs include Tommy Peller (Boys Basketball), Brittany Wagoner (Cheerleading), Tyler Fozkos (Boys Swimming), Houston Wolfe (Boys Diving) and Anthony Quiroz (Wrestling).

Mental Attitude award winners were John Thanos (Boys Basketball), Jessica OBrien (Girls Basketball), Brooke Lammers (Cheerleading), Brianne Hendrix (Gymnastics), Bill Bass (Boys Swimming), Milana Socha (Girls Swimming) and Tony Sanchez (Wrestling).

The Sportsmanship awards winners were Alec Houpt (Boys Basketball), Jessica OBrien (Girls Basketball), Giselle Uzzardo (Cheerleading), Renee Linsenmann (Gymnastics), Taylor Zakhar (Boys Swimming), Mallory Przybylinski (Girls Swimming) and Spencer Stockwell (Wrestling).

Most Improved award winners were Fred Price (Boys Basketball), Claire Holba (Girls Basketball), Allison Smith (Cheerleading), Alex OBrien (Gymnastics), Sean Miller (Boys Swimming Frosh), Nate Schuster (Boys Swimming Sophomore), Alex Corrente (Boys Swimming Junior), Jake Brehmer (Boys Diving), Maddie Miller (Girls Swimming Frosh), Amanda Furmankiewicz (Girls Swimming Sophomore), Brooke Vondra (Girls Swimming Junior), Haley Virden (Girls Diving) and Brandon Garvey (Wrestling).

Other special awards presented went to John Thanos (Trojan Award in Boys Basketball), Justin Zosso (Dedication Award in Wrestling) and Will Butz (Dedication Award in Wrestling).
