First DAC Volleyball title doesn't come easy for Trojans

The Chesterton volleyball team learned that lesson the hard way on Tuesday night as the Trojans picked up the school’s first ever Duneland Athletic Conference title with a 16-25, 25-17, 25-21, 22-25, 16-14 win over Crown Point.

Chesterton finished the DAC season with a 13-1 record, tying LaPorte for top honors.

Game one was all Crown Point as they celebrated Senior Night with an impressive display that turned into a 25-16 victory. Game two saw the Trojans turn things around and even the match with a 25-17 win.

Game three was back-and-forth with Chesterton getting a 25-21 win that featured a 4-0 run to finish the scoring. Game four went back to Crown Point 25-22, setting up a fifth game finale.

In game five, Chesterton jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Crown Point stormed back. The game would tie again at 9-all before the Bulldogs appeared to take control.

Crown Point served for the match up 14-13 when Emily Mozwecz ripped a ball cross-court for a point. When Amanda Gough blocked a ball and pushed it back over the net to an open spot in the middle of the floor, the Trojans led 15-14.

When the Trojans served with their first game point, Crown Point’s attack never cleared the net and Chesterton left with a victory.

Offensively, Mozwecz led the Trojans with 13 kills, while Kaelyn Marcus had 12 kills. MaryBeth Ryan, Morgan Palombizio and Nikki Gambin all had five kills in the victory.

Gough dished out 32 assists, while recording four kills as well.

From the service line, Stephanie Harrell tallied eight service aces, while Marcus added two.

Defensively, Harrell had 22 digs, while Amanda Vasquez had a career-high 17 digs. Kirstyn Nallenweg added 12 digs and Gough tallied 11 digs. Elissa Herakovich finished with nine digs and Marcus added eight digs.

At the net, Ryan had seven block kills, while Marcus added three blocks. Palombizio tallied two kills in the win.

Junior Varsity

Crown Point 25-22-10

The Chesterton junior varsity volleyball team finished the DAC portion of its schedule with a come-from-behind 19-25, 25-22, 15-10 victory over Crown Point.

Offensively, Taylor Katzelis had seven kills, while Michelle Fekete added six kills. Claire Holba and Taylor Chamberlain had three kills each.

Defensively, Jessica Peterson had nine digs with Amanda Robey adding eight digs. Colleen DeHenes had seven digs and Shelbie Sullivan had five digs.

At the net, Katzelis had two block kills, while Jessica Gamblin, Holba and Alexis Zimmer all had one block kill.


Chesterton 25-24-15,

Crown Point 20-25-12

The Chesterton freshmen volleyball team battled to a three-game (25-20, 24-25, 15-12) victory over Crown Point.

Brittany Funk led the Trojan offense with 10 kills, while Nikki Crawford added seven kills. Katie Povlinski, Kara Riggs and Katie Osborn all had three kills. Osborn also dished out 26 assists.

Brittany Bocian led the attack from the service line with five service aces. Osborn had four aces and Funk tallied three.

Defensively, Bocian had 18 digs, while Mary Carr had seven digs. At the net, Crawford had two block kills.
