Valparaiso Police Chief Mike Brickner will be formally announcing his candidacy for Porter County Sheriff at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Center Park in Downtown Valparaiso, at the corner of Lafayette Street and Lincolnway.

Brickner, a 27-year veteran of the VPD, has served as its chief for 10 years.

He is a graduate of Chesterton High School, Ball State University, the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety Police Staff and Command, and the Police Executive Leadership Academy.

Presently Brickner is president of the Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police, chair of the Porter County Safe Schools Commission, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

Brickner began with the VPD as a patrol officer, was promoted to supervisor in the Patrol Division with the rank of sergeant, then promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Detective Bureau. In addition, Brickner has served as public information officer for the VPD and as coordinator of the department’s field training program.

In 2006 Chief Brickner was the recipient of the William Sudberry Memorial Leaders Award, presented to the top law enforcement executive in the State of Indiana by Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police.

In 2011 Brickner was recognized by the National Committee for Employer Support of the National Guard and Reserve as a “Patriotic Employer” for his support of employee participation in the National Guard and Reserve Forces.

Under Brickner’s leadership, the VPD became in 2010 one of only 13 departments in the State of Indiana to earn accreditation through the Commission on Law Enforcement Accreditation (CALEA). The department successfully just received its CALEA re-accreditation certification in July.

Brickner and his wife Amy have been married for 14 years and have two children. He’s an active member of Calvary Church in Valparaiso and a member of the Valparaiso Kiwanis organization. In his spare time he coaches his son’s and daughter’s basketball teams and is currently the coach of the boys eight-grade team at Washington Township Middle School.
