Tri-Town seat on PCCRVC still vacant two months after Judy Chaplin's death

Back To Front Page

Nearly two months after Judy Chaplin’s death on May 21, her Tri-Town seat on the Porter County Convention, Recreation, and Visitor Commission’s Board of Directors remains vacant.

Chaplin’s successor in that seat will be determined by the Chesterton, Porter, and Burns Harbor town councils, at least two of which must agree on a candidate. The name of the person so appointed by the councils is then forwarded to the Porter County Commissioners, who ratify the councils’ majority decision and formalize the appointment.

The Tri-Town appointee is customarily a Dunelander in the tourism industry or related field. Chaplin was a third-generation florist who owned Shady Lawn Florist and served six years on the Chesterton/Duneland Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors and two on its Executive Board.

As of deadline today, the PCCRVC’s webpage still listed Chaplin as an active member.

None of the three town councils has yet formally announced the vacancy of the Tri-Town seat on the PCCRVC Board.

Chesterton Town Council Member Jim Ton, R-1st, told the Chesterton Tribune on Wednesday that he expects his council to do so soon.

At that time, persons interested in being appointed to the seat will be asked to declare their candidacy and describe their qualifications in a letter to the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office, Ton said.
