Tax Court upholds denial of exemption to Local 6787 banquet facility on 149

The Indiana Tax Court has upheld two earlier rulings denying a tax exemption sought by United Steelworkers Local 6787 on its property on Ind. 149.

On Friday, the Indiana Court released a decision confirming the Indiana Board of Tax Review’s 2915 denial of that exemption, which Local 6787 had sought for its union hall and Duneland Falls meeting and banquet facility.

The Indiana Board of Tax Review was itself upholding Porter County Assessor Jon Snyder’s earlier denial of such an exemption.

“Every dollar of granted tax exemption is ultimately made up by the remaining tax base and so it is imperative that the county guard against unnecessary and unlawful exemptions,” the Indiana Tax Court said in a statement released on Friday. “In this case the Assessor vigorously defended the county and its taxpayers against an unlawful tax exemption.”

SnyderŃwho found Local 6787’s use of the property “very notable and very desirable, but nevertheless not meeting the required legal test for an exemption”Ńvoiced his approval of the Tax Court’s ruling. “I am pleased with the decision by the Tax Court and I will continue to represent the best interests of the Porter County taxpayer.”
