While filing at the county level is still in a slug, this week saw a spurt of activity on the state level as many incumbents put in their bids for reelection.

All three Duneland state representatives -- Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, Chuck Moseley, D-Portage, and Scott Pelath, D-Michigan -- have filed to run for another term in office as did State Senator Karen Tallian, D-Ogden Dunes.

State representatives serve two year terms while senators’ terms run for four years.

This week also saw a Democratic challenger in Soliday’s district, educator and Valparaiso resident Deb Porter. Porter previously ran for state senator in 2012 against seat holder Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso.

According to the Secretary of State’s list of candidates, Porter County Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper is running on the Republican ticket for reelection.

Her husband, Porter County Superior Court 4 Judge David Chidester, also filed for another term as a Democrat.

Meanwhile, County Clerk Karen Martin, a Republican, filed to run for a second term. No one else has filed for the post thus far although Voters Registration Democratic Director Kathy Kozuszek announced in December her intention to run as a Democratic challenger.

A Democratic challenger has entered the race for County Coroner, Chuck Scheuer. According to his Statement of Economic interests, Scheuer works as a funeral director and is associated with Rees Funeral Home Bradley Chapel in Lake Station. His spouse works as a teacher in Portage.

This week also saw a spike in the number of candidates running for township offices in Duneland, both for trustees and board member positions.

Democrats Westchester Twp. Trustee Suzanne Philbrick and Jackson Twp. Trustee Janice Meyer filed for reelection. Also in Jackson, township board member Republican Judith Guernsey is in the running to keep her spot.

Republican Barbara J. Stroud filed her candidacy for a continuing term on the Westchester Twp. Board. Margaret (Peggy) Richardson, a Republican, filed for reelection as a Pine Twp. Board member.

Meanwhile, the Liberty Twp. board now has three candidates running on the Republican side. Incumbent Jacquelyn Sterling filed last week and recent filings were made by Jeffrey E. Larson and Tim Cole.
