County should compensate landowners who prevent stormwater runoff and pollution not hit them with fees

The following is a letter to the editor from a Tribune reader:

The Porter County Storm Water Board is considering reducing the new storm water fee for natural, undeveloped parcels owned by environmental organizations.

By containing the storm water on their property, the environmental groups decrease the storm water volume that the county board must handle.

The county board should give compensation to any group that maintains undeveloped property that assists in retaining storm water.

If public access to the site is required by the board, the payment to the land organization should be greater. There are many expenses involved in providing safe public access.

Just a reduction in the storm water fee is not adequate.
