County planners continue US 6 rezoning petition

A request to rezone roughly 10 acres of property at 53 and 57 E. U.S Highway 6 in Liberty Township from Rural Residential to Moderate Intensity Commercial was not heard by the Porter County Plan Commission on Wednesday night.

Instead, it has been continued and is scheduled to be heard at the commission’s next meeting, on Wednesday, July 9.

Plan Commission Executive Director Bob Thompson said that the attorney for the petitioner, William Ferngren of Ferngren Law in Valparaiso, requested extra time to prepare.

A group of residents from the neighboring subdivision Tanner Trace came to the meeting with questions prepared for the petitioner Tooraj Torabi, who also owns the property, specifically about a document that had initially been filed with the Plan Commission office showing a building and parking area.

Charles Ray of the Duneland Group Inc., who Torabi has sought to present his request, said this week that there are no plans for a building at the property currently. The document showing the building was intended to give county planners an idea of what the “worst-case scenario” would be and is no longer part of Torabi’s request, he said.

The request is only for the commission to approve the rezoning, Ray said.
