In contrast to their two previous meetings which exceeded two hours in length, the Porter County Commissioners wrapped up their business Tuesday in less than eight minutes.

The Commissioners, without discussion, unanimously signed off on second readings to rezone 63.5 acres between CR 650S and CR 700S and to officially raise the Jail Inmate Booking fee from $25 to $75.

The booking fee for the Jail will be collected once an offender is found guilty on criminal charges. The increase is to help the County pay for its $110,000 yearly contract with Porter-Starke Services, which offers substance abuse counseling.

County Sheriff David Reynolds had said that the County judges have supported the new fee and will include it in their court orders to ensure the inmates pay it.

In other matters, the Commissioners approved a grant agreement with the Indiana Department of Corrections for the County Juvenile Service Center. The grant of $55,000 will help fund assessing juveniles for the Centerís alternatives initiative.

The alternatives that the County Juvenile Services offer include two levels of house arrest, day reporting and after school programs in lieu of detainment

Next, the Commissioners voted 3-0 to replace a copier in the Plan Commission office that will reduce maintenance costs and also a new print and mail agreement for the County Treasurerís office.

The Treasurerís Office has selected The Masterís Touch, of Spokane, Wash. to do its mailing for the upcoming spring tax bills.

Treasurer Michelle Clancy said the price for Masters Touch is a little more than the previous vendor but it will provide a better e-billing component which will eventually make up the cost difference.
