The Porter County Board of Commissioners awarded bids for its 2019 Community Crossings paving projects at its meeting last week.

In the first round of 2019 Community Crossings projects, the County will have three sections of major roads paved: North Calumet Avenue from Valparaiso City Limits to U.S. 6, Meridian Road from Valparaiso City Limits to U.S. 6, and Sturdy Road from the railroad crossing to U.S. 30.

The Board voted to award the North Calumet Avenue project to Rieth-Riley, who had the low bid of $414,647.50. The Meridian Road project was awarded to Walsh & Kelly for the low bid of $330,531.90. The Sturdy Road project was awarded to Rieth-Riley for the low bid of $66,241.10.

County Planner Robert Thompson said the roads will get a new layer of asphalt between one and a half and two inches thick.

Commissioner President Jeff Good, R-Center, noted that the County’s new Highway Engineer, Matt Gavelek, has been working on making sure paving jobs last longer. “We’ve started to up our game on using more weather resistant material,” Good said.

Chip and Seal

Highway Superintendent Rich Sexton received approval to buy a used double drum roller from West Side Tractor Sales for $36,900.

Sexton chose the machine over a cheaper model that had over 4,000 hours of operation time on it. He said the machine from West Side Tractor Sales has only 1,100 hours of time on it, and double drum rollers generally need major maintenance starting at 8,000 hours. The machine is one of the last pieces in the Department’s fleet of equipment for doing in-house chip and seal of County roads.

Sexton said his crew will chip and seal about 56 miles of roads in unincorporated Porter County this year as part of an effort to preserve approximately 118 miles of roadway before major repairs are needed.

Of the 56 miles up for a new seal, about 18 miles are in Duneland. North Commissioner Jim Biggs said, “There’s going to be a lot of work in Jackson, Liberty, and Pine, as well as up by the National Park,” including major work on Meridian Road and North Calumet between U.S. 6 and Valparaiso City Limits.

The following sections of Duneland roads are on Sexton’s list: 350E in Jackson Township from 1050N to Burdick Road, 700N in Jackson Township from 625E to Old State Road 2, 725 N in Jackson Township from 400E to 500E, Burdick Road in Westchester/Pine Townships from 250E to 400E, 425E in Pine Township from 1500N to Furness Road, 500E in Pine Township from 1400N to 1500N, 250E in Jackson Township 1050N (200 ft), 600E in Jackson Township from Ind. 2 to 700N, 700N in Jackson Township from railroad crossing to the end, Hadenfelt in Westchester Township from pavement to Furnessville Road, Veden Road in Westchester Township from pavement to Furnessville Road, 1325N in Pine Township from Brummitt Road to 375E, 450E in Pine Township from 1400N to the Little Calumet, 575E in Pine Township from Burdick Road to 1250N, 1000N in Liberty Township from 200W to Town limits, 200E in Liberty Township from Toll Road to 900N, Mink Lake in Liberty Township from Calumet to the end, 950N in Liberty Township from Meridian Road to Town limits.
