The Porter County Board of Commissioners is moving forward with its first capital improvement project: the Porter County Government North County Complex in Portage.

At its meeting Tuesday morning, the Board approved a contract with American Structurepoint for design work on the improvements to the North County Complex at 3560 Willowcreek Road. They also announced an amendment to the proposed design--an 11,500-square foot “out building” that the County will share with Portage Township. The new building will house a community room, an assessor’s office, and a health department office. It will also be the new office for the Portage Township Trustee and a permanent location for the Portage Food Bank.

Commissioner President Jeff Good, R-Center, said the Board is ironing out a memorandum of understanding with the Portage Township Trustee, who has said that Portage Township will share mowing and plowing responsibilities for the property. “We’re gonna have boots on the ground and the right people taking care of these things without stretching our service groups to the nth degree,” Good said.

The board also opened quotes for soil boring on the project. The contract was awarded to Alt & Witzig Engineering for the low bid of $5,680.

In addition, the Board approved a contract with KBIC for property and casualty insurance consulting on the capital improvement projects; and an initial payment of $93,812.50 to Gariup Construction for work on the front plaza of the County Administration Center at 155 Indiana Ave. in Valparaiso.
