Porter County Auditor Vicki Urbanik reports property taxes will increase in small to modest increments in all but eight of Porter Countyís 31 taxing districts in 2020.

The eight districts with lower 2020 rates compared to 2019 are: Boone Township, Hebron, Center Township, Portage Township, Valparaiso (Center MTE), Portage City (Portage Township), Union Township, and Town of Pines.

Town of Pines was the only Duneland taxing district to see a decrease in property taxes this season, with the rate dipping 0.0705 from 1.9576 in 2019 to 1.8871 for 2020.

Good news: Porter County homeowners will see a bit of an increase in their homestead credits this year, since the 2020 Homestead rate increased slightly from 10.15 in 2019 to 10.7 for 2020, Urbanik said.

The most significant decreases were 0.1817 in Hebron, 0.1413 in Union Township, and 0.137 in Boone Township. The other decreases were 0.02 or less.

Taxing Unit Rates

Taxing district rates are the sum of rates from various taxing units that serve each district. District rates are made up of the following unit rates: the County government rate, the Airport rate, the local schools rate, the local library rate, and the township rate. Residents of incorporated towns/cities also pay a municipal rate.

Dunelanders who live within the limits of an incorporated municipality pay a portion of the township rate for the township their municipality is in, but they do not pay the entire township rate on top of their respective municipal rates.

Taxpayers in Duneland, including a portion of Pine Township, pay the Duneland Schools rate for local schools. Dunelanders living in Westchester Township or any of the cities and towns within it, pay the Westchester Public Library rate while those in Jackson, Liberty, or Pine pay the Porter County Library rate.

The County government rate increased from 0.45 in 2019 to 0.4569 for 2020.

The Airport rate increased from 0.0080 in 2019 to 0.0097 for 2020.

The Duneland Schools rate--not including the supplemental property tax referendum rate of 22 cents per $100 of assessed valuation--increased from 1.0178 in 2019 to 1.0414 for 2020.
