Homestead refunds undeliverable

Back to Front Page

More than 1,300 homeowners in Porter County have not received their homestead credit refund checks that they are entitled to.

Porter County Auditor James Kopp said about 1,300 state homestead refund checks were returned as “not deliverable,” while about 80 checks from a separate refund project just in Valparaiso were also returned.

The state refund checks result from the 2007 Indiana General Assembly, when lawmakers set aside $350 million in homestead credits to be returned to homeowners in the form of refund checks. Valparaiso also had a one-time homestead refund program that was approved in conjunction with an annexation.

Kopp said the names of the homeowners whose refunds couldn’t be delivered will be posted on the county’s website, www.porterco.org

 beginning on Monday.

Homeowners who didn’t get their checks but who can’t go online should send a letter, to the attention of “refund checks,” to the Porter County Auditor’s office, 155 Indiana Ave., Room 204, Valparaiso, Ind, 46383. The letter should state the property owner, address and any other relevant information. No phone calls will be accepted.
