Political couples don’t always agree. Just ask former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan and his wife, Maggie.

On Thursday, Democrat gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson announced that she has been endorsed by former Indiana First Lady Maggie Kernan. Earlier this month, Joe Kernan endorsed Long Thompson’s Democrat challenger, Jim Schellinger.

Though their support went to different people, the two Kernans made similar comments in their endorsements.

“I have known the Schellinger family for many years,” Joe Kernan said in the endorsement press release issued earlier this month. “Jim is a great friend and will make a great Governor.”

"I have known Jill for many years and am confident that she has all the qualities needed to make an outstanding Governor,” Maggie Kernan said in her endorsement. “Throughout her career she has worked to make a positive difference in the lives of all the people she has served and time and again, she has done this successfully."

The winner of the May 6 Democrat primary will face incumbent Republican governor Mitch Daniels in November.
