Valparaiso Police are investigating the death of a Mishawaka woman whose body was found Monday in a car buried under snow in the Target parking lot.

According to police, on Monday morning officers were called to the lot to investigate an abandoned compact car on the far east side of the lot.

“The vehicle was nearly completely covered in snow, only the rear quarter panel visible,” as “a result of recent snow falls and snow removal efforts in the parking lot,” police said.

Officers first checked the vehicle’s license plate, which returned to a Mishawaka woman reported missing on Jan. 18 and suicidal, police said.

They subsequently found the woman, deceased, in the vehicle’s back seat. “No obvious signs of trauma were observed,” police said.

No autopsy has been ordered but the results of a toxicology screen are pending, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris told the Chesterton Tribune today.

Harris did note that the woman was “dressed and in a sleeping position” when found. There was also evidence in the vehicle of prescription sedatives. There was no note.

“Due to the history of the woman and evidence at the scene we believe that this is probably an overdose,” Harris said. “However, further testing will determine the final cause of death. There is a possibility that the death was a result of hypothermia.”

The VPD has been in contact with the Mishawaka PD and is continuing its investigation.
