A Merrillville woman remained missing this morning, after she was last seen Monday evening struggling in the waters of Lake Michigan off Miller Beach in Gary, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is reporting.

The woman has been identified as Tiara Harvey, 24.

According to the DNR, shortly after 7:45 p.m. Indiana Conservation Officers were advised of a person missing in the water. Harvey was swimming with two friends when all three attempted to return to shore because of high waves and strong currents, the DNR said. A good Samaritan managed to help Harvey’s friends back to shore but Harvey was seen to go under and not return to the surface.

An initial search was conducted by the Lake County Marine and Aviation units, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Gary Police and Fire departments, with a GFD diver entering the water. But the search was suspended late Monday “due to darkness and dangerous wave and rip current activity,” the DNR said.

Search efforts resumed this morning with shore-based searched conducted by Indiana Conservation Officers and the GPD and GFD. The Lake County Aviation Unit was also searching from the air and the Marine Unit by water. In addition, Conservation Officers expected to deploy a boat equipped with side-scan sonar.
