A pregnant Valparaiso woman and her unborn baby have died of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident last week on Ind. 130 in Center Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police is reporting.

The woman was identified as Jessie R. Dexter, 28, who the Cook County, Ill., Medical Office said succumbed to her injuries, along with her unborn child, on Monday, at Loyola University Medical Center.

According to police, at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, Dexter was a front-seat passenger in a 2007 Dodge Dakota being driven by Lucas Smith, 28, of Valparaiso. Smith was westbound in the 200 west block of Ind. 130 when he lost control of the pickup truck and slid sideways into the eastbound lanes, where the pickup was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet box truck.

Smith was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with internal injuries, police said, while his rear-seat passengers, Rachel Barrett, 23, of Demotte, and Mira Dexter, 7, of Valparaiso, were transported to Porter Regional Hospital.

The driver of the box truck, Sean Hohl, 25, of South Bend, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Hobart with complaint of pain, police said. Hohl was driving for fox Fire Safety of Mishawaka.

The PCSP’s Accident Reconstruction Team continues to work on its investigation of the crash, police added.
