VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana woman faces neglect and
residential entry charges after police say she reported her children missing
after mistaking a neighbor’s home for her own.
Thirty-one-year-old Charity Atkinson called Valparaiso police Dec. 21 and
reported that her 5-year-old and 3-year-old children were missing.
The Times of Munster reports Atkinson was exiting a neighbor’s residence
when officers arrived and led them back to the wrong house.
Police found her two children sleeping on the floor of the family’s nearby
home. Authorities say they had not been fed dinner the night before and
didn’t have beds.
Atkinson told police she’d left the residence to buy cigarettes. But
officers found no evidence that the purchase was made and a half-pack of
cigarettes was found on a table in the home.
