Burns Harbor Police are investigating the theft early Monday morning of multiple cases of whiskey from a semi-tractor trailer parked at the Pilot Travel Center, 243 U.S. Highway 20.

According to police, at 4:45 a.m. a trucker employed by Kriska Transport of Ontario, Canada, parked his rig at the Pilot to use the restroom. On returning to his truck, at 5:22 a.m., he observed a light-colored, older model minivan parked at the rear of his trailer with two subjects out of the vehicle.

The trucker, entering his cab, at first thought nothing of it, but then noticed that “the vehicle was still there with the driver’s and passenger’s doors open,” police said. Suspicious now, he exited the cab to investigate, saw the minivan leave the scene, and then noticed that the trailer’s seal had been removed.

“The driver stated he had not opened the trailer yet,” police said.

The trucker subsequently discovered the contents of his trailer--1,064 cases of Crown Royal peach whiskey--in disarray, with approximately 160 cases missing.

Police put the loss at $3,840.
