Two Lake County men have been charged in Porter County in connection with the theft in multiple jurisdictions of catalytic converters, Valparaiso Police said.

According to the VPD, Eric Goodson, 42, of Merrillville, and Edward Fouts, 28, of Griffith, were being held in the Lake County Jail after being taken into custody by Hammond Police and charged with “a similar type crime.”

Detectives from the VPD, Portage PD, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police, and the Valparaiso University PD traveled to Lake County and interviewed Goodson and Fouts, the VPD said, and both “admitted to their involvement in the numerous converter thefts which had been reported throughout Porter County.”

In late February the VPD reported the theft of 12 catalytic converters within a few hours from vehicles parked in the lots of apartment complexes on the north and south sides of the city. The converters were all cut from the vehicles and removed, for an estimated loss in each case of $450. Stolen catalytic converters are commonly sold to metal recyclers.
