The Porter County Coroner’s Office has identified the two victims in Sunday’s fatal crash on U.S. Highway 12 in Westchester Township.

They are Shawn Robb, 39, of Hobart, the driver of the vehicle; and his wife and passenger, Alisha Robb, 38.

The Coroner’s Office used dental x-rays to make the identifications, Coroner Chuck Harris told the Chesterton Tribune late on Monday.

Cause of death, Harris said: blunt force trauma. The results of routine toxicology screens are pending.

According to a statement released by the Coroner’s Office, shortly after midnight Shawn Robb was westbound on U.S. 12 when, east of Furnessville Road, his 2013 Chevrolet Equinox left the roadway to the north for unknown reasons and struck a tree. The vehicle then burst into flames.

“The cause of the crash is still under investigation,” Harris noted. “The vehicle does not appear to have applied braking before collision.”

Porter Fire Chief Jay Craig, who responded to the scene and whose firefighters extinguished the blaze, called the damage to the Equinox “some of the worst” he’s seen “in a very long time.”
