The name of the man who died on Monday in a one-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 20 in Chesterton has been released.

The victim was identified as Donald Gish, 59, of Liberty Township.

Gish died of blunt force trauma, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris told the Chesterton Tribune after deadline on Tuesday.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday, Gish was westbound on U.S. 20 in a Ford pickup truck when he left the roadway to the north, crashed into a deep ditch, then continued into the strip mall parking lot just west of C.R. 200E, where he came to rest. Gish was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although Harris initially considered the possibility of Gish’s having suffered a medical emergency of some kind just prior to the crash, he now believes that Gish--who was determined to have been “talking in his phone” at the time--“was distracted and drove off the side of the road.”

No autopsy will be conducted but Harris did order a routine toxicology screen, results of which should be available in a month or so. There’s no reason to think right now, though, that either alcohol or drugs played any role in the crash, Harris emphasized.
