A motorist was injured and cited on Friday after striking a Duneland school bus on West Porter Ave., in an accident which also injured a student on the bus, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 7 a.m. Mary C. Dugan-Marx, 54, of Chesterton, was northbound on South 20th Street when she disregarded the stop sign at West Porter Ave. and struck a Duneland school bus westbound on West Porter Ave.

The driver of the bus was Melanie M. Tall, 49, of Porter.

Dugan-Marx sustained a head injury and was transported to hospital, police said, while a 10-year-old boy on the bus complained of pain to his shoulder/upper arm.

Dugan-Marx advised police that she had “no recollection of the crash other than seeing yellow at some point during the incident.”

“Due to the damage to both vehicles at the scene and the statement from (the bus driver), it can be determined that (Dugan-Marx) was traveling at a speed well over the 30 mph speed limit when the crash occurred,” police said.

Dugan-Marx was issued a citation for disregarding a stop sign.

Police estimated total damage to Dugan-Marx’s 2006 Honda Civic and the bus at up to $10,000.
