A Valparaiso woman was killed Monday evening when her vehicle was struck by a train at the County Line Road grade-crossing in Portage, the Porter County Coroner Office is reporting.

The victim has been identified as Barbara Gibson, 75.

According to Coroner Chuck Harris, at 4:55 p.m. Gibson was southbound on County Line Road, traveling behind a school bus. When the bus crossed the railroad grade-crossing Gibson followed it. The bus, however, then stopped just on the other side of the tracks, leaving Gibson in the middle of the grade-crossing.

Gibson’s Chevrolet Impala was then struck by an eastbound Norfolk Southern train and came to rest on the east side of County Line Road, in Porter County, Harris said. Gibson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by the Gary Police Department, which is seeking to review the train’s video tape of the crash, Harris said.

The results of a routine toxicology screen are pending but Harris said that “drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the accident.”
