Charges are pending against a Valparaiso man who the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said was driving under the influence of alcohol when he disregarded a red light on C.R. 250W in Center Township and struck another vehicle, in a crash which claimed his wife’s life.

Police identified the victim as Theresa Johnson, 66.

According to police, at 9:40 p.m. Theresa Johnson’s husband, Dwayne Johnson, 67, was northbound on C.R. 250W, driving a 2002 Lincoln Town Car, when he disregarded a red light at the intersection of U.S. Highway 30 and collided with a second vehicle eastbound on U.S. 30.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet HHR, was Andrew Young, 41, of Warsaw, Ind.

Theresa Johnson sustained “severe internal injuries” and was transported to Porter Regional Hospital, where she subsequently died, police said.

Young suffered a small laceration to his knee but refused to be transported, police said. His front-seat passenger, Erin Young, 41, sustained non-life threatening injuries to her lower body and was transported for treatment to St. Mary’s Hospital in Hobart, police said. The Youngs’ children, 5 and 1, were both in child safety seats and suffered minor injuries, police said.

Dwayne Johnson sustained internal injuries and was also transported to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he “came back with alcohol in his system during his course of treatment,” police said. A search warrant was obtained for a blood draw and “charges are pending at this time since Mr. Johnson was kept at the hospital for treatment of his injuries,” police said.

Young, for his part, “tested negative for alcohol” on a portable breath test conducted at the scene, police added.
