UPDATE: An arrest was made in the hit and run fatal crash on Saturday, February 24, 2018.

Late Saturday evening, Indiana State Police were contacted by a local police department with information pertaining to the hit and run that occurred on I-80/94 earlier that day.

Further investigation showed that a local salvage yard was called to pick up a 2006 dark gray Volkswagen Passat that the owner wanted to scrap.

The owner of the car mentioned to the salvage tow truck driver that the car had been involved in a crash.  After paying for the car and towing it back to their yard they contacted their local police who contacted ISP.

A detective went to the address in the 2200 block of Carolina Street in Gary where the Passat was towed from and spoke to one of the residents.  During the conversation the owner of the Passat, identified as Joshua Davis, 27 of Maywood, Illinois turned himself into Runde as the driver at the time of the fatal.

It is believed that the Passat hit the 2002 Explorer and fatally struck Nathaniel McIntee, 31 of Merrillville.

Davis is a suspended driver and was taken to Lake County Jail where he was formally charged this morning, February 26, 2018, through the Lake County Prosecutorís office for Leaving the Scene of a Crash causing Death, a Level 5 felony.

Two men died Saturday after they got out of their vehicles after a multi-vehicle accident on I-80/94 in Gary.

Indiana State Police report that at approximately 4:13 a.m. Saturday morning a 2002 Ford Explorer occupied by three people was eastbound on I-80/94 when it sideswiped a semi-trailer near Grant Street. The semi, a 2009 Freightliner, owned by WTG Transport out of Bronx, New York, and driven by Levis Coreas, 39, of Miramar, Florida, was pulling a box trailer and was able to come to a stop on the outer shoulder.

The Explorer, after hitting the trailer, overcorrected, lost control and flipped over onto its roof. The driver and front seat passenger crawled out the Explorer to assist a back seat passenger, identified as Michael T. McIntee, 29 of Gary, Indiana, when the Explorer was hit by a black Volkswagen (VW) four door.

The VW, after hitting the Explorer, went off on the inner shoulder where it struck a 2004 Honda Pilot, driven by Ryan J. Vlasic, 37 of Madison, Alabama. Vlasic had initially pulled over on the inner shoulder, after the Explorer hit the semi, to see if he could be of any assistance.

The driver of the VW, described as a black male, got out of the VW and then immediately got back into the car and took off eastbound.

A 2007 Hyundai, Santa Fe, driven by Bradley M. Stevenson, 34 of Munster swerved to avoid the crash and hit at least one of the two men standing alonside the roadway. Police said it is not known which vehicle hit the second man.

The victims have been identified as Nathaniel McIntee (brother of the passenger), 31 of Merrillville, Indiana and Jason Howard (nephew of the passenger), 34 of Fairmont, West Virginia, police said.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coronerís office.

The passenger in the Explorer was taken to North Lake Methodist in Gary with non-life threatening injuries. Stevenson was also taken to North Lake Methodist with non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was diverted onto Grant Street until approximately 9 a.m., for reconstruction of the crash, removal of the deceased, injured, and vehicle, and clean-up of the roadway.

State Police are asking anyone who may have information on the driver of the VW which left the scene. The vehicle is described as a black Volkswagen four door, possibly a Passat. It has heavy front end damage. Please contact Detective Gary Runde at 219-696-6242. Information can be left anonymously.
