UPDATE: An arrest was made in the hit and run fatal crash on Saturday,
February 24, 2018.
Late Saturday evening, Indiana State Police were contacted by a local police
department with information pertaining to the hit and run that occurred on
I-80/94 earlier that day.
Further investigation showed that a local salvage yard was called to pick up
a 2006 dark gray Volkswagen Passat that the owner wanted to scrap.
The owner of the car mentioned to the salvage tow truck driver that the car
had been involved in a crash. After
paying for the car and towing it back to their yard they contacted their
local police who contacted ISP.
A detective went to the address in the 2200 block of Carolina Street in Gary
where the Passat was towed from and spoke to one of the residents.
During the conversation the owner of the Passat, identified as Joshua
Davis, 27 of Maywood, Illinois turned himself into Runde as the driver at
the time of the fatal.
It is believed that the Passat hit the 2002 Explorer and fatally struck
Nathaniel McIntee, 31 of Merrillville.
Davis is a suspended driver and was taken to Lake County Jail where he was
formally charged this morning, February 26, 2018, through the Lake County
Prosecutorís office for Leaving the Scene of a Crash causing Death, a Level
died Saturday after they got out of their vehicles after a multi-vehicle
accident on I-80/94 in Gary.
Police report that at approximately 4:13 a.m. Saturday morning a 2002 Ford
Explorer occupied by three people was eastbound on I-80/94 when it
sideswiped a semi-trailer near Grant Street. The semi, a 2009 Freightliner,
owned by WTG Transport out of Bronx, New York, and driven by Levis Coreas,
39, of Miramar, Florida, was pulling a box trailer and was able to come to a
stop on the outer shoulder.
The Explorer, after
hitting the trailer, overcorrected, lost control and flipped over onto its
roof. The driver and front seat passenger crawled out the Explorer to assist
a back seat passenger, identified as Michael T. McIntee, 29 of Gary,
Indiana, when the Explorer was hit by a black Volkswagen (VW) four door.
The VW, after
hitting the Explorer, went off on the inner shoulder where it struck a 2004
Honda Pilot, driven by Ryan J. Vlasic, 37 of Madison, Alabama. Vlasic had
initially pulled over on the inner shoulder, after the Explorer hit the
semi, to see if he could be of any assistance.
The driver of the
VW, described as a black male, got out of the VW and then immediately got
back into the car and took off eastbound.
A 2007 Hyundai,
Santa Fe, driven by Bradley M. Stevenson, 34 of Munster swerved to avoid the
crash and hit at least one of the two men standing alonside the roadway.
Police said it is not known which vehicle hit the second man.
The victims have
been identified as Nathaniel McIntee (brother of the passenger), 31 of
Merrillville, Indiana and Jason Howard (nephew of the passenger), 34 of
Fairmont, West Virginia, police said.
Both men were
pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coronerís office.
The passenger in
the Explorer was taken to North Lake Methodist in Gary with non-life
threatening injuries. Stevenson was also taken to North Lake Methodist with
non-life threatening injuries.

the crash, removal of the deceased, injured, and vehicle, and clean-up of

asking anyone who may have information on the driver of the VW which left
the scene. The vehicle is described as a black Volkswagen four door,
possibly a Passat. It has heavy front end damage. Please contact Detective
