Police are investigating the theft May 23 of 29 bottles of champagne and hard liquor from Jewel-Osco, Chesterton police said.

According to police, at 6:03 a.m. two male subjects entered the store. Police said security footage captured their movements as one subject loaded a shopping cart with bottles while the other stood between the interior and exterior automatic doors on a cellphone, and activated the entrance doors twice, allowing the second subject to push two carts full of bottles out of the store.

Police said the footage shows the subject who loaded the carts dropped a bottle of champagne, which shattered, as he was loading the first cart. When an employee came to clean up the broken glass, police report the subject on the cellphone asked that employee a question, while the other subject broke into a locked room in the liquor section to load the second cart.

Police estimate the loss, of 13 bottles of Moet & Chandon Champagne, 12 bottles of Tito’s Vodka, four bottles of Patron Silver Tequila, and a locking device on the secure room in the liquor department, at $1,370.71.
