A Foley, Minn., trucker died on Thursday after losing control of his vehicle on the Indiana Toll Road in Jackson Township, the Indiana State Police said.

The man was identified as John A. James, 57.

According to police, at 11:45 a.m. James was westbound on the Toll Road, hauling an empty box trailer, when for unknown reasons he entered the grassy median at the 34.2 mile marker, crossed both eastbound lanes, went through a guardrail on the south side, traveled down an embankment, and came to rest against some trees.

On responding to the scene, Trooper O’Bryan Winfield began chest compressions on James until EMS arrived but James was pronounced dead at the scene.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris told the Chesterton Tribune late on Thursday that cause of death is pending an autopsy and the result of a routine toxicology screen. Police did say that James may have experienced a medical emergency which initially caused him to lose control of his rig.

Also responding to the scene was the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department.

James was driving for Nordic Beagle Express of Foley.
