A trucker was seriously injured and airlifted from I-94 in Chesterton after rear-ending another semi on Thursday, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 7:40 a.m. Nathan P. Samples, 47, of Madrid, Iowa, was eastbound on I-94 when, near the Ind. 49 interchange, he rear-ended a semi-tractor trailer “partially in the far right lane and partially on the right shoulder.”

Samples’ rig jackknifed and several of the steel rolls he was hauling broke free and “smashed through the cab of (his) Peterbilt,” police said.

Samples was trapped inside the tractor and had to be extricated by Chesterton firefighters. “He was pretty entangled,” Deputy Fire Chief Nate Williams told the Chesterton Tribune today. “We had to cut the thing apart.”

Following extrication, Samples was airlifted from the scene and flown to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said. Williams said that the helicopter landed in the eastbound lanes of I-94 between the two trucks and the Ind. 49 overpass.

Traffic was diverted onto U.S. Highway 20 in Burns Harbor for several hours for scene investigation, cleanup, and removal of all vehicles and cargo.

The CFD cleared the scene at 9:15 a.m.
