BATTLE GROUND, Ind. (AP) - State Police say a fire that erupted in a truck loaded with dog food closed part of a northern Indiana highway for several hours.

Trooper Kent Wainscott tells the Journal & Courier that another trucker spotted smoke coming from the tractor-trailer’s axle area Tuesday and alerted the burning truck’s driver of the fire by citizens band radio.

He says the truck driver was able to disconnect his rig from the trailer before it became engulfed in flames. The trailer and its load of dog food were destroyed in the fire.

Tuesday’s fire closed I-65’s right southbound lane for several hours near the Indiana 43/West Lafayette exit in Tippecanoe County.

The damaged truck was owned by US Express Leasing Inc. of Chattanooga, Tenn.
