A wrong-way driver on the Indiana Toll Road was stopped by a trooper on Friday before he could cause an accident, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 10:32 p.m. Trooper Alaa Hamed was eastbound on the Toll Road when, just east of the Calumet Ave. exit, he observed headlights directly in front of him. Hamed immediately activated his emergency lights and siren, prompting the driver of the westbound vehicle to come to “an abrupt stop.”

The wrong-way driver, identified as Charles R. Wireman, 25, of Demotte, proved to be intoxicated and registered a blood alcohol content over the legal limit of .08 percent, police said. Wireman was transported to Lake County Jail.

“Safety along our roadways and our community is our highest goal,” said Lt. Mike Young, commander of the ISP Toll Road District. “We were lucky to have one of our troopers be in the right place at the right time to potentially avoid another senseless tragedy.”
