The Tri-Towns’ fire departments all responded to a blaze early Saturday morning in an electric control room at the 160-inch plate mill at ArcelorMittal’s Burns Harbor facility.

Porter Deputy Fire Chief Jay Craig told the Chesterton Tribune that the PFD was dispatched shortly after midnight to assist Arcelor’s contracted fire protection service, Allied Universal. Also dispatched: the Burns Harbor, Chesterton, South Haven and Washington Township FDs.

The PFD was on scene for approximately two hours, deployed four dry-chemical extinguishers to knock the fire down, Craig said. Firefighters then waited until the wiring had cooled and cleared the scene around 2:30 a.m., with Allied Universal remaining on the scene standing by on fire watch.

Craig was unable to say what caused the fire or how much damage was sustained by electrical equipment.

As of deadline, ArcelorMittal had not responded to an e-mail from the Tribune.
