Too light pick up truck causes trailer to flip on I65

Back To Front Page

Trying to pull a loaded trailer with a pick-up that was too light caused the driver to lose control and flip the trailer, Indiana State Police said today.

Preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 7:53 a.m., today Jaime Enriquez, 32 of Chicago, driving a 2001 Dodge Dakota pick-up, was pulling a twenty foot trailer loaded with two scissor jacks northbound on I-65 between U.S. 30 and 61st Avenue when he over-steered.

This caused Enriquez vehicle to jack-knife, slide off the roadway, hit a guard rail then flip the loaded trailer.

Enriquez had just picked the trailer up at a rental company in Merrillville; the rental agreement stipulated that it must be pulled by a much heavier vehicle than the Dodge Dakota pick-up he was driving.

Enriquez was not injured.

The right lane was closed for 45 minutes to up-right the trailer and scissor jacks.

The Dodge Dakota stayed up-right.

Enriquez was cited for Unsafe Vehicle Operation.
