The recent completion of the third-lane expansion project between mile
markers 10 and 15.5 on the Indiana Toll Road has prompted ITR Concession
Company, the Toll Road’s lease-holder, to increase the speed limit for both
east- and westbound traffic from between mile markers 1 and 20.
The speed limit for passenger vehicles in this area has increased from 55
miles per hour to 70 mph; the speed limit for heavy trucks, from 55 mph to
65 mph, ITR said in a statement released today.
New speed limit signs have been installed in the area as of Feb. 3 and the
adjustment was effective immediately.
A traffic study of the area was conducted by the Indiana Department of
Transportation prior to the approval, ITR noted. “The data from the study
supported the increase, and authorization was given for increasing the speed
limit” between mile markers 1 and 20.
The speed limit remains at 55 mph between mile markers 20 and 25.5 (to
accommodate heavier traffic around the Portage Toll Plaza at mile marker
23).
However, the limit returns to 70 mph light vehicles/65 mph heavy vehicles
from mile marker 25.5 to the Ohio state line.
