An explosive device was detonated on Friday in a chemical toilet at the Paul C. Zona Sr. Wildlife Sanctuary, 601E 950N in Jackson Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police reported after deadline on Monday.

According to police, sometime between 8:30 and 9 p.m. a neighbor heard a “loud explosion.” Then, on arriving in the sanctuary on Saturday morning, he observed that a toilet seat and paper dispenser were lying in the parking lot. He also observed that the chemical toilet itself and a nearby fence were damaged.

Police said that a “gray residue” on the toilet seat looked similar to that left by fireworks and that all four sides of the toilet “were broken at the screws and pushed to one side.”

A “hole behind the toilet” appeared to be where the firework had been detonated, police added.

The damage was reported to the owner of the toilet, Johnny on the Spot of North Judson, Ind.

Police estimated total damage to the toilet and the fence at $1,650.
