No one was injured Monday and no one was cited when a tire came off a vehicle and struck another on Indiana 49 near Indian Boundary Road, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, at 7:25 p.m. Mark E. Brengettcy, 43, of Gary, was northbound on Ind. 49 approaching Indian Boundary Rd. when he suddenly lost control of his steering. Police said he was able to guide his car to the right shoulder but saw that one of his tires was “heading down the highway” and struck a second vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was Colleen Johnson, 40, of Valparaiso, who advised she felt something hit her car and then saw a tire roll off of Ind. 49 into a ditch on the west side of the highway, police said.

Brengettcy advised he had work done recently to his vehicle’s front end and fears his vehicle might have suffered some unibody damage, police said.

Police said they did not observe damage to the Ind. 49 roadway from Brengettcy’s vehicle driving on the left front brake rotor a short distance when his tire sheared off.

Police estimated total damage to Brengettcy’s 2002 Ford Focus and Johnson’s 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt at up to $2,500.
