The Verizon store at 705 Plaza Drive was robbed at gunpoint on Monday by three men who first herded employees and customers into a back room and restrained them there, the Chesterton Police Department said.

No one was hurt in the incident, the CPD said. “Other than being escorted to a back room and restrained, no customers or employees were physically injured and employees were able to remove the restraints and contact law enforcement.”

The robbery occurred around midday, when a trio of male subjects entered the Verizon Store and began apparently to browse the merchandise and engage employees “in product questions while other customers were in the store.”

One of the subjects then displayed a handgun and instructed customers and employees to raise their hands. “All personnel present were taken to a back room and physically restrained,” the CPD said.

The CPD did not say how many customers and employees were in the store at the time and in what manner they were restrained.

The three subjects “then proceeded to gather store equipment, a customer’s purse, and undisclosed contents of the store safe before leaving the store by the back door,” the CPD said.

The three were observed placing the stolen items in the rear of a dark-colored, late-model Jeep or Dodge SUV with a white sticker in the rear window and driven by a fourth man. The SUV was last seen fleeing the scene southbound on Plaza Drive.

The four suspects were all described as black males. Two were described as being in their mid to late twenties, 5’ 7’’ to 5’ 10’’ in height, and wearing jeans, one of them dressed in a white shirt and tennis shoes, the other in a striped shirt and hiking boots. There was no description of the third robber and none either of the driver of the SUV.

“The incident is being actively investigated and further information will be released as it becomes available,” Police Chief Dave Cincoski said. “The Chesterton Police Department was assisted by the Porter Police Department.”

Anyone with information on the robbery is urged to contact the CPD and ask to speak to an investigator with the Duneland Metro Investigations Division at (219) 926-1136.
